Snowfall in Darjeeling and Sikkim
IBNS, Darjeeling/Gangtok, Jan 1 : Heavy snowfalls have covered up large parts of the eastern Himalayan states and parts of neighbouring Bhutan and Nepal, heralding the first day of 2011 with mercury plummeting to minus eight degrees.
The snowfall, the first of this region, since midnight Friday covered up roads at some places under 30 inches.
Reports reaching from different regions said that Sandakphu, Phalut, Sree-Khola, and the Tigers hills have been covered by snow, Lodama Police station in-charge Dilip Das said.
Darjeeling, also fondly known as the Queen of the Hills, had been experiencing freezing cold condition for past five days. But latest snow fall and rains in the lower region since Friday night dipped mercury to -8 in some of the areas around Sandakpu and Phalut.
Local people came out in large number to greet the season's first snow, which occurs sometime at end of Dec or Jan.
However, usual fun is missing in the hills of Darjeeling as the tourists have deserted following constant threats of bandh by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), demanding a separate Gorkhaland state.
Snowfall has been reported from upper regions of Sikkim.
Rains also were reported from the Terai, the Dooars and Siliguri forcing the people to remain indoor.
KalimNews: A report from Darjeeling stated that snowfall was recorded in Sandakphu, Phalut, Shreekhola and adjoining regions but not in Tiger Hills though the temperature here diminished to -5 degree. Snowfall in most areas was about 5 inch. Temperature in Sandakphu was -15 degree. About 60 tourists of which 12 are foreigners are yet to be rescued from Sandakphu area as the roads are closed due to snowfall.  Rainfall throughout the day was recorded in Darjeeling and Tiger Hills.
CID chargesheet in first cyber crime case
TT, Guwahati, Jan. 1: The CID yesterday filed its first chargesheet in a cyber crime case.
The case, involving a 21-year-old youth accused of harassing one of his girlfriends, was cracked with the help of Google Inc. based in California.
“We filed the chargesheet in the court of the chief judicial magistrate, Kamrup, yesterday,” a CID official said.
On November 18, the victim lodged an FIR at the CID police station alleging that some unknown person has created a fake Orkut profile in her name and posted vulgar messages and also uploaded her photographs there.
Based on her complaint, the CID registered a case (number 60/10) under Section 66 (A) and 67 of the Information Technology (IT) Act and started investigations.
“A request was sent to Google Inc. to provide the log details of the Orkut profile. A reply was received from Google Inc., which revealed Internet Protocol (IP) details of the profile creator,” the officer said. From the IP address, the CID sleuths ascertained that the accused person used a BSNL Internet connection for creating the Orkut profile.
“On request, BSNL furnished the name and address of the person who was allotted this particular IP address. During further investigation, it was found that this person’s son had created the fake Orkut profile and he was arrested subsequently,” he said.
The CID sleuths seized the central processing unit (CPU) of the computer of the accused from his residence near Zoo Road Tiniali and sent it for forensic tests.
“The deleted photographs of the complainant could be recovered from the hard disk of the computer of the accused by using forensic tools and the case was established. Moreover, the accused confessed to his guilt during interrogation,” he said.
The accused was identified as Sankar Manas Kashyap, a student of a private computer institute. He came from a well-to-do family and his mother was a senior official of Guwahati Refinery.
Last month, the CID arrested an engineering student from Jabalpur who had allegedly morphed nude photographs of a girl from Guwahati with whom he had an affair through a social networking site.
