Demonstrations banned in Titanic Park
Prabin Khaling, KalimNews, Gangtok, May 15: Authorities here have banned any kind of demonstrations at Titanic Park, which has been slowly evolving as Sikkim’s Jantar Mantar with organizations using this space in main Gangtok as a platform to voice their anger, concern or sympathy on a host of issues affecting the people here.
Titanic Park has been clubbed together with MG Marg where prohibition on holding procession is already on since 2005-06. The list of prohibited activities has been expanded further for Titanic Park and MG Marg.
‘All kinds of processions, protests, rallies, dharnas and demonstrations are prohibited and banned on Titanic Park and MG Marg in public interest’, states a recent government order. It is an effective shut down on activities meant to attract people’s attention on issues which may range from local to international, political to social and solidarity to homage.
Titanic Park, as all knows, was a convenient address in heart of the capital to promote or spread awareness on subjects concerning the people. Being centrally located, any demonstration or rally gathers immediate attention but also crowds out the space and traffic movement.
Till before this notification, Titanic Park used to be the most suitable venue for holding candlelight vigils. In the past, organizations, some registered and mostly impromptu associations, had hold candlelight vigil at Titanic Park to pay tribute to firebrand Gorkha leader Madan Tamang or to express solidarity to the 17th Karmapa and tsunami victims. Sometimes it was also a space to highlight a social issue like HIV-AIDS.
With the ban on such demonstrations at Titanic Park, the nearest option is at the old Bansilal petrol pump near the police headquarters. Authorities had also, in past, allowed the use of the private taxi stand near the police headquarters and the roof of Kanchenjunga shopping complex.
However, recently the authorities have been allotting the taxi stand near east district administrative centre at Sichey to hold dharnas and demonstrations. But as it is pointed out, the site is off location and difficult to get your message across the people.

GJM looking for positive change in Darjeeling hills
PTI, KOLKATA: With the Trinamool Congress-led combine at the helm in West Bengal, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha is expecting a positive change in the attitude of the government towards its statehood demand.
GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said that people had voted overwhelmingly for its candidates in the three hill sub-divisions only to facilitate realisation of their goal of a separate State in Darjeeling.
“We have only one agenda and that is a separate State for the people of the hills and the people have voted for us to achieve that only,” Mr Giri said over phone.
The newly-elected MLA from Kalimpong, Harkabahadur Chhetri, said not only its three candidates had won the election, but an independent, backed by GJM, from Kalchini also made it to the Assembly.
“The verdict of the people is very clear that the people of the hills want a separate State and so the newly elected government should work in that direction to honour the wishes of the people,” Mr Chetri said.
Asked about their perception of the new government, Mr Chetri said, “The Left Front government was very much opposed to a separate State and they wanted to suppress the voices of people, but we are hopeful that Mamata will give proper honour to our demands,” Mr Chetri said.
Asked if they are allowed to raise their voices in the Assembly, he said, “It is not the time to speculate. Rather, we will have work together for the proper formation of the State and we are hopeful that Mamata Banerjee will understand the sentiment in the hills.”
“She coined the slogan ‘poriborton' or change, and so she should translate her slogan into reality and in the hills the people are eagerly waiting for the change,” he said.
Three GJM candidates Trilok Kumar Dewan, Harkabahadur Chhetri and Rohit Sharma won from Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong respectively and another independent candidate Wilson Champamary, supported by GJM, won from Kalchini constituency.

Storms strike two districts- One dies, 1000 houses destroyed
TT, Malda/Alipurduar, May 15: Two storms, separated by a distance of over 350km, cut a swathe through Birpara in Jalpaiguri district and Malda’s Gajole last night, killing one person, flattening houses and uprooting trees.

Residents of at least 12 villages in two panchayats of Alal and Karkach in Gajole woke up to the roar of a storm, followed by hail, around 3am today. The storm that lasted for barely 10 minutes flattened about 600 houses and left vast areas without power.

Gajole block development officer Ajmal Hossain visited the affected areas at 6am today and reported to the higher authorities that hundreds of people had been rendered homeless and their crops completely damaged.

The deputy pradhan of Karkach, Sadhan Mondol, said all were lucky to escape. “I woke up at 3am when I heard the wind, came out of the house and saw glittering objects flying through the air. I realised that they were tin roofs of huts. We huddled together in the rain and the hailstorm. After sunrise, we could not recognise our village,” said Mondol, whose house was also completely damaged.

Thatched roofs of huts were hanging from power lines and trees were lying uprooted along with electricity poles when Malda additional district magistrate Tarun Sinha Roy visited Alal, about 35km from here, at 11am.

Roy said he could not say when the affected villages would return to normal. “Six persons have been admitted to the rural hospital in Gajole. Most of them have been injured by flying debris and two of them have been hurt after a wall collapsed,” said Roy.

Plastic sheets, clothes and dry food had been despatched to the affected areas. “We are trying to send the relief as quickly as possible. Dry food has also been distributed among the affected people in the afternoon. Vast areas have been without power since the storm,” said the additional district magistrate. More than 400 houses were damaged when a storm hit Birpara in Alipurduar block around 11pm yesterday. The chimney of the factory of Tasati Tea Estate was blown off and several shade trees were destroyed in Tasati, Dalgaon and Dimdima tea estates.

Madarihat block development officer Hirak Mondal said Ranjit Barman, 45, in Dimdima tea estate had died when a tree had fallen on the house he was sleeping in. “We can pay Rs 1 lakh to the next of kin of Barman. We will also provide Rs 4,000 to Rs 8,000 to each family to repair their houses.”

The BDO said Birpara had been without power for more than 15 hours and he had asked the gram panchayat pradhan to submit a report on the destruction.

“More than 500 houses have been damaged in the area. We have tried to provide some relief to those who were rendered homeless. But I am afraid that the relief will reach them after the offices open tomorrow,” said Bikas Das, the RSP sabhapati of the Madarihat panchayat samity.
