Cong gen secy fails to impress, GJMM upbeat

SNS, NAXALBARI/SILIGURI, 14 APRIL: Scores of Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (GJMM) activists today joined the Congress rally addressed by party general secretary Mr Rahul Gandhi in the hope that the latter would play a positive role in resolving the problem of the Hills in the next round of tripartite talks scheduled to be held in New Delhi after the Assembly election.
Though a section of Congress supporters was not pleased with Mr Gandhi's  speech, the GJMM supporters expressed their happiness over his confidence to throw out the CPI(M)-led government from the state.
A senior leader of the GJMM-backed tea plantation workers’ union, Mr Harihar Acharya, said: “We want to bring about a change in West Bengal to restore democracy. After the Sipchu incident, in which three persons were killed in police firing, it has been well-established that there is no democracy in West Bengal. As a result we have decided to join the rally of Mr Gandhi and extend our support to the Congress-Trinamul Congress alliance here.”
“We hope Mr Gandhi would take the initiative to adopt a resolution in the next tripartite meeting related to formation of a regional authority in the Hills after the election and would support to add the Terai and the Dooars to our ultimate goal of Gorkhaland,” he added.
The Congress's youth icon also impressed students and youths from the Hills. A Class VII student from Hatighisa, Ajoy Tamang, who joined the rally waving the GJMM flag, said: “I have come here to welcome Mr Rahul Gandhi and to hear what he says about Gorkhaland.”
A Class XII student, Miss Sangita Lama, and her friends were also impressed by Mr Gandhi’s appeal to bring about a change in the state. “He is a nice man and always supports Aam Admi. We need a change in Bengal,” Miss Lama said.
When the Nepali-speaking people, including the GJMM-backed tea workers’ union leaders, were happy at the end of the rally, a Congress supporter from Siliguri, Mr Utpal Roy Choudhury, said: “Mr Gandhi could have touched upon the issue of Darjeeling in his speech for the Nepali-speaking people when a large number of GJMM supporters came here expecting he would tell something about the Hills.”
No intention to divide Bengal by giving separate state status to Gorkhaland: Mamata

SNS, Siliguri: The Trinamul chief and railway minister Miss Mamata Banerjee today said that she had no intention to divide Bengal by giving separate state status to Gorkhaland.
Addressing a rally at Circus Maidan on Savok Road in Siliguri today Miss Banerjee said that she wanted to develop Darjeeling Hills, not divide Bengal .
“I had told the people of Darjeeling that the Hills would remain within the state. We have to develop that area and have planned to set up a centre of excellence,” Miss Banerjee said.
Besides, Terai and Dooars would be developed to convert Siliguri into Switzerland in the “real sense” as the gateway of the northeastern region, she said. She claimed that her proposed railway projects would connect Sikkim and Bhutan.
Miss Banerjee was campaigning for party candidate, Mr Gautam Deb, nominated for the Dabgram-Fulbari Assembly constituency.
Miss Mamata Banerjee said: “The CPI-M is trying to bring back terminated, frustrated and rotten leaders to rescue the sinking boat of the CPI-M.  Rotten leaders are always rotten... they would not be able to do anything.”
“We can set up industry. We have already set up several factories on railway land. We did not force people to leave their farm lands for setting up industries. We would set up more factories to generate employment for youths here,” she promised.
Miss Banerjee also promised that if the Trinamul Congress comes to power it would set up a mini secretariat for North Bengal in Siliguri.
The Trinamul chief, who was once the member of NDA, today urged the people not to cast vote in favour of BJP, a party that plays the Hindu card in divide votes to help the CPI-M.
“The CPI-M has imported the BJP to divide the vote bank of the Opposition and the Trinamul Congress,” she said.
Morcha meet jam cuts short Yechury speech

Vivek Chhetri, TT, Darjeeling, April 14: If inclement weather disrupted a number of political meetings in the foothills, hordes of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha supporters in Kurseong almost forced CPM politburo member Sitaram Yechury to cancel his address in Darjeeling today.

Yechury was travelling up the hills when his car was stuck in Kurseong for more than four hours. He could not move further as Morcha supporters, who had come to attend a meeting addressed by party president Bimal Gurung, had parked their vehicles in a haphazard manner along the road.
It was around noon when Yechury, accompanied by CPM Rajya Sabha member Saman Pathak, reached Kurseong. The CPM had organised its first public meeting in Darjeeling to seek votes for its candidate K.B. Wattar.
Even though the meeting started around 2pm, Yechury and Pathak could reach Darjeeling only at 4.55pm, five minutes before the time allotted to the CPM was to end.
Yechury could speak for only 13 minutes, while Pathak didn’t address the crowd at all.
“What happened in Kurseong was a little appalling. We were caught in the traffic jam for five hours and the administration really needs to pull its socks up. The jam was not because of the presence of a large crowd but because vehicles were parked in a way that led to congestion along the road.”
The traffic was snarled up over a distance of three kilometres between Kurseong Phatak and the Tourist Lodge area. Yechury could resume his journey up the hills only after Gurung’s meeting was over and the Morcha supporters started dispersing.
Asked if he thought it was a deliberate attempt by the Morcha to stop him from attending the meeting in Darjeeling, Yechury said: “I am not sure about it. But if it was a conspiracy to stop me from addressing a meeting in Darjeeling, then I must be an important man.”
In his speech, the politburo member tore into the Congress and the Trinamul Congress.

“There is a slogan for change and the Congress, which is running the show in Delhi along with the TMC (Trinamul), has already showed us what kind of change they are talking about. There are two kinds of people in India today. One are crorepatis whose number is increasing every day and the others are those who have to go hungry because they do not have Rs 20 in their pocket. It is better that such a change does not come to Bengal,” said Yechury.
He added that the amount embezzled in the 2G spectrum allocation could have ensured 35kg of rice to every family in India at Rs 3 per kg.
Yechury also launched a veiled attack on Mamata Banerjee.

“The NH55 is the only highway which has been closed for nearly a year now in the country. When we enquired with the surface transport ministry about the highway, the reply was that nothing much could be done unless the railways realigned tracks which run along the highway. We all know who is in charge of the railways,” said Yechury.
Yechury backs GNLF’s demand for Hill Council
IE, Siliguri: After GNLF chief Subhash Ghising’s return to Darjeeling, senior CPM leaders have also started coming back to Darjeeling for holding public meetings. Significantly, after Ghising was evicted from the hills, no senior CPM leader including state minister Ashok Bhattacharya who is in charge of North Bengal could hold a public meeting in Darjeeling in the face of GJM resistance.
After being emboldened by GNLF’s return to the hills, Sitaram Yechury, CPM politburo member, today visited the hills and held a public meeting there. Yechury who was supposed to reach the meeting venue in Darjeeling around 1 pm, reached there at 5 pm as GJM supporters had blocked the road near Kurseong where GJM chief Bimal Gurung held a public meeting and for which thousands of GJM supporters had gathered at the spot.
Yechury, who had a permission to have a public meeting at the venue in Darjeeling till 5 pm, could reach there at 5 pm after the GJM supporters cleared the way for him. Yechury, in his 15-minute speech, blasted the Trinamool-Congress alliance. He said, “The Trinamool-Congress alliance is not only detrimental for the state, but also for the country. The Central government has never considered to reopen the NH- 55, the Darjeeling-Siliguri highway, which is closed now for almost a year.”
On Gorkhaland issue, Yechury said the Left Front wants the New Gorkha Hill Council bill to be passed in the Parliament.
“We support the GNLF demands and believe the New Gorkha Hill Council under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution is the only solution left for the hills. We will raise the issue in the Parliament,” he said.
Gunning for Gorkhaland
Vijay Jung Thapa, Hindustan Times, April 14, 2011:If anything reinforces the case for Gorkhaland and highlights how different the Nepalis of Darjeeling are from the Bengalis of Bengal -- it is the assembly elections of 2011.
While all of Bengal is consumed by the clash between Mamata Banerjee and Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, up here in the Darjeeling Hills is largely ignored. Up here, all election talk centres around a rivalry between an old, wily Gorkha warhorse and his biggest bête noire, a muscleman turned Gandhian, who was once his trusted lieutenant. Up here, it's all about a mighty clash between Subhash Ghisingh and Bimal Gurung.
Yes, the khukuris are being brandished once again.
Yet, till just a week ago, this wasn't the case. Then Bimal Gurung, president of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), seemingly ruled the hills unchallenged. Riding a wave of discontent against Ghisingh in 2007, Gurung had outwitted his former boss by snatching power and forcing him out of the hills and into exile in Jalpaiguri. It was a masterstroke -- and it strangely involved a popular TV show called Indian Idol.
The third season of Indian Idol featured a talented Nepali policeman called Prashant Tamang. Success in the initial rounds catapulted Tamang into an instant hero -- and since the format of the show involved voting through SMS, it mobilised a Nepali community, clamouring for heroes. Ghising ignored the phenomenon, but Gurung saw an opportunity. He whipped up the hysteria, getting everyone into the voting process, even rolling out money power for the exorbitantly-priced text messages. Tamang's win as Indian Idol was hailed as a great "Gorkha victory" and Gurung recognised as the man behind it.
Gurung never looked back. Soon after in a public rally, Gurung, a stocky, menacing man with exaggerated mannerisms, rejected Ghisingh's formula of the Sixth Schedule for Darjeeling. The Sixth Schedule formula -- which was even ratified by the Union Cabinet -- would have given tribal-like status to the Nepalis of the region and more autonomy to the Hill Council. Ghisingh's popularity was already on the wane -- and anyway nobody understood the intricacies of the Sixth Schedule. It was easier to back Gurung and the emotive promise of Gorkhaland.
Over the next three years, Gurung, unlike Ghisingh, decided to adopt more Gandhian ways. This involved more than just burning incense sticks next to a Gandhi portrait in every rally. Crippling strikes were called, and they carried on for months, leaving the tea, timber and tourism economy in a shambles. But the Gandhian cloak had a Fascist border. Gurung soon launched the GLP (Gorkhaland Personnel) -- a quasi police "moralistic" force that chastised people using tobacco or pulled up kissing couples. On mandated days, the GLP enforced a Nepali dress code for the entire community to show they were different from Bengalis. Cars coming up the Hills were forced to change their number plates to GL (Gorkhaland) and charged registration fees. Gurung himself was surrounded by a slew of cloned bodyguards -- all with spiky gelled hair, goatees, Gaelic tattoos on forearms and revolvers thrust into waistbands.
But popular support stayed with him and the Centre and the state called him to represent the Nepalis in tripartite talks. His image did take a beating when Madan Tamang, a popular leader and conscience keeper of the movement, who often criticized both Ghisingh and Gurung, was stabbed to death by hoodlums in broad daylight. The Bengal police found a GJM connection to the killing and for a few days, fearing a backlash, Gurung stayed out of Darjeeling. But he returned dramatically, with more than a thousand supporters defying prohibitory orders stating emphatically: "Bimal Gurung did not kill Tamang." That was that.

http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/HTEditImages/Images/gurung.jpgGurung has always displayed a keen sense of realpolitik. In 2009, he wooed BJP leader Jaswant Singh to fight the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat. Singh returned the favour by raising the Darjeeling issue several times in Parliament. In this election though, Gurung seems to have ditched the BJP, instead favouring the Trinamool-Congress combine, supporting them in the Doars and Terai regions. Of course, in the hill seats of Kalimpong, Kurseong and Darjeeling the GJM has fielded its own candidates. As is the GJM way, all three candidates have already submitted signed resignation letters. "They will only focus on Gorkhaland. If they deviate, they will be removed," says Gurung. For him it's a foregone conclusion -- the GJM is going to win all three seats.
But it is not as if his former maverick mentor has his way. For the last three years, Ghising has been living out of a rented two-storey structure in New Jalpaiguri, plotting his return. The Election Commission's code of conduct and its promise of a level-playing field gave him the perfect opportunity. In the dead of night, under heavy police protection, Ghisingh set off for the Hills, arriving in Darjeeling early on April 8 and the next day in a well-attended rally announced Schwarzenegger-like, "See…I'm back."
There's an archetypal story on Ghisingh from the late 50s, when he was a Gorkha soldier in the Indian Army. Serving in the Northeast, one day he captured a Naga terrorist, who, on learning he was a Nepali from Darjeeling, urged him to fight for his own freedom from tyranny. It wasn't till the 80s, though that his outspoken politics and fiery oratory skills fanned a mass, albeit bloody, movement for Gorkhaland. The violence forced both Rajiv Gandhi at the Centre and Jyoti Basu in the state to come together as signatories to usher in the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council. But within years the euphoria faded and frustration mounted as the Hill Council, riddled with corruption and autocracy, gathered more abuses than accolades. His Sixth Schedule formula was the last straw.

http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/HTEditImages/Images/subash.jpgWith Ghisingh's return, the stakes for this election are clear. On May 13, the hill people will have decided for not only Gurung or Ghisingh - but also for the Sixth Schedule formula or a Gorkhaland state. In his come-back rally, Ghisingh argued, "Gorkhaland was just a brahmshastra (primary weapon) to achieve citizenship for Nepalis, who were labelled foreigners. I never asked for Gorkhaland." He went a step further ridiculing the GJM for chasing a dream, "What gives you the right to take the people for a ride?" In reply, Gurung was at his menacing best, "He (Ghisingh) has a tourist visa till the election. Once that is over he will be made to leave."
Whatever the verdict, Darjeeling could experience another round of violence that could plunge the area into further disarray. Already, the burden of living out an agitation has taken a toll. The mass movement for Gorkhaland started in the 80s -- and now almost 20 years later the Darjeeling hills have the look of an area that lives in the decaying ruins of its former glory; pot-holed roads, shabby infrastructure, little electricity or water and no opportunities. As Udaya Mani Pradhan, a prominent resident, puts it: "We have sacrificed heavily."
But it is these very symbols that steel the heart of the hill people, convincing them their struggle is right and justified. And that it is time for them to make and claim their own destiny.

Deb urges Somnath to campaign for him

SNS, SILIGURI/kolkata,14 APRIL: Mr Somnath Chatterjee, former Lok Sabha Speaker and expelled CPI-M leader, will campaign for the controversial state housing minister Mr Gautam Deb at Dum Dum from where he is contesting the Assembly poll on 24 April, Mr Deb said today indicating that the process of readmitting Mr Chatterjee to the party fold had started.
When contacted, Mr Chatterjee said if his health permitted and his doctor allowed, he would take part in the election meeting.  Mr Ashok Mitra, finance minister of the Jyoti Basu-government, who later turned into a vocal critic of the Left Front's policies, would also address the election meeting, according to Mr Deb.
This drew immediate reaction from the Trinamul Congress chief Miss Mamata Banerjee, currently campaigning in north Bengal, who said : “Efforts are on to save the sinking boat of the LF by utilising the services of former CPI-M leaders. But nothing can stop the Trinamul Congress-Congress combine from forming the government throwing the rotten Marxists out of power.”
However, Mr Deb said he would disclose some sensational information about the Trinamul Congress and its chief in Kolkata on 16 April. He disclosed that he had taken the decision to invite Mr Chatterjee to address his election meeting in consultation with the state secretary, Mr Biman Bose and  chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. CPI-M general secretary Mr Karat, who had been instrumental in the expulsion of Mr Chatterjee on the Indo-US nuke deal issue, had also been informed, Mr Deb said. The CPI-M's latest Mamata-baiter said since the party was facing the worst political crisis since 1977 it was only natural for it to take initiatives  to bring back leaders such as Mr Chatterjee.

Trinamul leaders, however, denied the charges. They said members of the RYF had attacked their supporters and one of them has suffered injuries.
