Dr. Chhetri said that whatever is printed in Nepali Newspapers are not true so people should not read these papers. Prof. Lama has misused the platform of Kalimpong Press Club and being an educationalist politics is not his subject, he added. He further invited Prof Lama and other opposition leaders to an open session organised by GJMM in Town Hall of Kalimpong on 24th November.
Dr. Chhetri further said, if Prof Lama is agent of either Sikkim or any Government then he will not attend it similarly the other opposition leaders too have to attend the meeting and if GJMM is able to convince them about the merits of accepting Interim Setup then they have to beg for forgiveness.
Meanwhile GJNM, women's wing of GJMM in a press conference condemned the statement of Prof. Lama as purely political and termed it as an attempt to obstruct the process of formation of Interim setup, Tara Lohar Lepcha Central committee member added during the press conference.

Hills talks to go ahead
TNN, DARJEELING: The state home department's additional chief secretary G D Gautama, who is currently in Darjeeling on a three-day visit, reiterated on Sunday that the ongoing talks to find a solution to the Hills problems would go ahead. But he refused to mention any dates, saying the decision would be taken by the Union government.
Gautama was speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Gold Cup football tournament in Darjeeling. "I cannot say when the talks will be held because that is the Centre's prerogative. We too are waiting for the Union home ministry to announce the date," he said. The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has demanded that the interim set-up proposed by the Centre be implemented in the next political-level talks within the second week of December.
GJM has started a month-long agitation in the Hills and plains to demand early talks and inclusion of the plains in the interim set-up. However, with the Union government yet to fix a date for the talks and a rejuvenated opposition in the Hills, much is dependent on the next round of talks for bringing stability to the Hills.
When asked about the state government's participation in the talks, Gautama replied: "Yes, the state government will definitely be party to the process as only talks can find solutions to the problems". The CPM is opposed to the inclusion of Terai and Dooars in the arrangement demanded by the GJM, while the opposition parties in the hills are opposed to the interim set-up itself.
PTI, Darjeeling, Nov 22 : A solution to the Darjeeling issue is possible next month during the tripartite talks, the date for which is yet to be fixed, West Bengal Home Secretary G D Gautama has said.
"The date for the next tripartite talks can be announced any time by the Centre, possibly within this month, and a solution is possible," Gautama, who is on a visit here, said on the sidelines of inauguration of the Gold Cup football tournament yesterday.
The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) has demanded that the interim set-up proposed by the Centre be implemented in the next political-level talks within the second week of December.
The GJM has started a month-long agitation in the hills and plains to demand early talks and inclusion of the Terai and Dooars in the plains in the interim set-up.

TT, Birpara (Alipurduar), Nov. 21: The Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikas Parishad today said it would support a candidate in the coming Assembly election who, it thinks, would be able to serve the tribal people.
The outfit also iterated its decision of not leaving an inch of land in the Dooars and the Terai to “anybody” (read the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha).
“The government can take any decision but we will not leave an inch of the Terai and the Dooars to anybody. This is our land and we want the development of the area,” said Tej Kumar Toppo, the general secretary of the state committee of the Parishad, at a public meeting here, about 65km from Alipurduar. “In the coming Assembly election, we will support a candidate whom we think will serve the people in the Dooars.”
On the floating of a new outfit by a former leader, Toppo said: “Rajesh Lakra (who had launched the Dooars Terai Adivasi Vikas Parishad) has been banished from the Parishad. A few people are with him but they do not matter to us. We will organise our movement as usual.”
Morcha campaign
The Morcha will launch a campaign in the foothills on Tuesday to press for the inclusion of the Terai and the Dooars in the interim set-up for the hills.
About 300 supporters of the Morcha’s Terai unit blocked NH55 on the Panchanoi bridge for more than an hour today, demanding that the subdivisional officer of Siliguri come to the spot and receive a memorandum from them. Later, SDO Rajat Saini went to the area and received the memorandum.

Cup helps hills revive golden moments - Government eager to see ‘development’ in Darjeeling
Vivek Chhetri, TT, Darjeeling, Nov. 21: A sport event held after 25 years galvanised Darjeeling into a path of unity as people left behind political differences and uncertainties generally associated with the hills.
The final match of the All India Brigade of Gurkha Gold Cup tournament between the Army XI and the Calcutta-based Southern Samiti attracted an overwhelming crowd unseen in recent times.  The Army XI won the match 2-0.
Before going home with trophies and cash rewards, the players gave back the football-crazy town a platform to relive the charms of an old Darjeeling.
“I get a sinking feeling when I think the tournament is over. Since November 12, I had been a regular to the field and the matches gave us immense pleasure to relive the old days,” said Anuraj Sharma, a resident of Darjeeling.
But Punam Kumar Sharma found one thing missing in this year’s matches: crowds’ ground support for teams.
“The atmosphere was like in the old days. In the earlier days, there used to be supporters who would root for a particular team throughout the tournament. That was missing this time,” said Punam, a lawyer.
The tournament was last held in 1985, weeks before a 28-month-long violent agitation for Gorkhaland was unleashed in the hills. For 25 years, the event could not be held for “various reasons” cited by the organisers.
The aficionados of the tournament made it sure that they passed on the game spirit to new generations also.
“I wanted my son, Atindra, to experience the atmosphere we grew up in. He is eight-year-old and I brought him along to savour that,” said Rupendra Pradhan, a trader.
That even the state administration is aware of the hill people’s association with the game can be gauged from the presence of G.D. Gautama, the additional chief secretary of Bengal, at today’s closing ceremony as the chief guest.
Gautama felt the pulse of the people well and subtly conveyed the message on the need for “development” in the hills. “It is a happy feeling to be present in such a historic event. People of Darjeeling are known to be sport loving and our efforts will be to see that such events bring about development in other areas also,” said Gautama.
Not that only sport has been a casualty in the hills in recent times.
Nevertheless, the people are eager to move forward now. “We hope the tournament will be able to attract big clubs as it used to earlier,” said Rajesh Rajak, a hotelier in town.
The Army XI, which had a rock solid defence today, had their named etched in the trophy that was donated by the Hong Kong-based Gurkha Brigade. A brace from Goram Zoramchhama sealed the match in their favour much to the delight of the Sunday crowd.
Zoramchhama was also adjudged the man of the match, while Francis Xavier of Southern Samiti was declared the man of the tournament. The cash prizes for the winners and the runners-up were Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 respectively.
The matches were organised by the district administration in collaboration with the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Sports Association.
Jordan Norbu, a member of the organising committee, said the Cup was the “blue ribbon” tournament of the Indian Football Association (IFA) and hoped it regained its lost glory.
“Next year, we will ask the IFA to include the Gurkha Cup in its calendar so that big clubs from across the country can play here without their dates clashing with other tournaments,” said Norbu.
He said efforts would be made to have teams like Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, Salgaonkar, Churchill Brothers and even first-time Durand Cup winners, Chirag United, in the championship in 2011.
“We are very happy that the event has ended smoothly,” said Norbu.
Road mishap
TT, Siliguri: Dhruba Das, 38, was killed when a Siliguri-bound private bus knocked him down at Hatighisa near Naxalbari on Sunday. After the incident, angry residents of the area ransacked the vehicle and blocked NH31C for two hours. The blockade was lifted around 5pm after police arrival. The bus has been seized but the driver managed to escape.
Film festival

Films from 15 countries will be screened during the six-day fest organised by the Siliguri Cine Society. The event will be inaugurated by actor Sabyasachi Chakraborty. Fire scare
TT, Siliguri: A fire broke out near the ammunition point at the Binnaguri Military Station in Jalpaiguri on Saturday. Two fire engines of the army from Dhupguri doused the flames in half-an-hour. No loss of life or property has been reported.
Unity week
TT, Jaigaon: The consulate general of India at Bhutan’s Phuentsholing organised a programme to mark the National Integration Week on Sunday. At the event, a documentary on national integration was shown and dances and songs of India and Bhutan were performed before the dignitaries from both the countries.
Rail buses miss date - Track laying to be over by march
TT, Siliguri, Nov. 21: Commuters will have to wait till March for a hassle-free ride between Siliguri and Bagdogra as the railways are unable to complete the laying of tracks between the two places for rail buses.
Two rail buses had arrived here from Rajasthan in April to ply between Siliguri Junction and Bagdogra.
The Northeast Frontier Railway had said the vehicles would start running from September before the pujas. However, with the tracks not ready yet, they are currently parked at the Siliguri Junction station.
“Work on the tracks is going on and the construction division of the NFR has set March next year as their target. We will start running the rail buses after conducting a few trial runs,” said B.L. Patil, the divisional regional manager of Katihar division of the NFR.
The rail buses had been announced by railway minister Mamata Banerjee during her visit to north Bengal in October last year.
According to NFR officials, a dual track comprising both meter gauge and broad gauge is being laid on the 12km stretch between Siliguri Junction and Bagdogra.
“We are laying dual tracks which will have four rails. The inner tracks on which the rail buses will run are meter gauge and the outer rails are broad gauge for goods and express trains. We have set March 2011 as the deadline to complete the tracks,” said an official of the NFR’s construction division.
The two diesel propelled rail buses can ferry 60 persons each. In each carriage, four seats have been kept for railway personnel running it.
“The rail buses will be introduced for the daily commuters travelling between Siliguri Junction and Bagdogra. However, it hasn’t been decided on how many trips the two vehicles will make per day and whether or not, there will be stops in between the two destinations,” said another official.
The commuters were excited at the prospect of the rail buses so that they could give a miss to daily traffic snarls and bumpy rides on NH31.
“It should take 20 minutes to cover the distance between Siliguri and Bagdogra. Usually, it takes double the time because of traffic congestion on this route. The rail bus will be swifter,” said Priya Rai, a resident of Bagdogra who works in a private company in Siliguri.
“The roads turn bad every monsoon and regular travel in auto rickshaws and buses is tiring. The rail bus will be a much more comfortable means of transport than the other vehicles,” said Alka Roy, another resident of Bagdogra.

Manoj Bogati, Darjeeling Times.com

A reason to smile - kudos to 'Anuradha Koirala'
Kamal pradhan editor of Gorkha Times unveils the plight of nepali women as well as contribution made by philanthropist Anuradha Koirala of Maiti Nepal. He has been writing immensely upon the social issues and hope this time too the GT readers would have a glimpse of it.
‘Anuradha Koirala’ – a name to remember and a reason to smile again and again, a social activist which the world has witnessed bringing a voice to the oppressed combating the sexual exploitation of Nepal's women and children. She is the founder and chairperson of Maiti Nepal a charity based non -governmental organization started way back in 1993 by professionals from different arenas.
Under her able guidance and hard toil the organisation has helped rescue and rehabilitate more than 12,000 victims of trafficking and exploitation. All sorts of help being rendered to the victims by the said organization right from anti trafficking measures and measures to reduce the stress of trauma meted by the perpetrators both physically and mentally.
CNN Heroes has been honouring personalities who brought a change through their relentless effort.
Her efforts have brought accolades to her both nationally and internationally. While this year she has been nominated in the category “Protecting the Powerless” in the CNN Heroes Awards 2010, While she opines “It is my strong hope to stop every Nepali girl from trafficking,”
The recognition is based upon online voting process and I do hope that each and every vote would bring millions of smiles to the people who have represented their voice at such a platform.
Anuradha Koirala was nominated by Nisha Pradhan who resides at Texas, U.S.A. Her effort in bringing light to the world about the said social activist is praiseworthy.
I as a freelance writer take a great pleasure in writing about such a great woman, who has raised her voice at a time when others kept numb at this grim issue inflicting Nepal. A social reawakening is needed at the moment for this great nation, a nation -which has seen strife, economic downfall and above all exploitation of its citizens “beyond borders”!
Also I realized the fact how cruel can mankind be as I watched an internationally acclaimed documentary titled “The day my god died” which highlighted the dark shadow looming large at Nepal, with children under the age of 7 were the victims of so called perverts.
Non-governmental organisations in Nepal estimate that as many as 15,000 Nepali women are trafficked to India annually for commercial sex work through the open porous border. Lack of agricultural initiatives by the government and cottage industries have even made situation worse, leaving no option but to find greener pastures and ultimately falling into the trap of traffickers often promising them to find a job at India’s concrete jungles. Time has come for Nepal government to wake up, I still remember the words of a gentleman whom I met during an event at Delhi - “hungry and frustrated citizens cannot make a country prosperous”
Hope Nepal does one day overcome the menace with the active participation of its denizens along with social leaders like Anurada Koirala who braved all odds.
