Landslides cut off Hills for two hours
Deep Gazmer, TNN , DARJEELING: The Hills was cut off for a couple of hours from the rest of the country due to landslides at various places in Kurseong subdivision though there were no reports of loss of life or damage to properties.
Incessant overnight rainfall continued through Saturday morning, barring a few hours of break. On Friday night, landslides hit the Pankhabari and Rohini routes in Kurseong, halting vehicular movement. Electricity poles and trees were uprooted at various places due to the high wind blocking roads. However, the roads were cleared on Saturday for vehicular movement.
"Vehicular movement via Pankhabari and Rohini in Kurseong were disrupted because of landslides and trees uprooted from last night's rain. But that has been cleared today," said Mohan Gandhi, Darjeeling DM. The Kurseong SDO asked schools to remain closed on Saturday because of the high wind and incessant rainfall.
"Monsoon has made its advent in North Bengal. Therefore continuous rainfall can be expected," said Subir Sarkar, in-charge of the weather station at the North Bengal University (NBU) in Siliguri.
National Highway 31A, the arterial link to Sikkim, remained cut off on Saturday because of a 20-metre stretch giving way near Rambhi. Efforts are on to restore vehicular movement. All transport movement to the Himalayan state has been diverted via Kurseong.
NH-55, the main link connecting Darjeeling, is also out of service because of a landslide at Ghayabari on 14th Mile in Kurseong. In fact, NH-55 has been out of bounds to vehicle movement since June 14 last year. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) service to and from Darjeeling to Siliguri has also been suspended. Vehicular movement from the Mungpo-Sevoke route has also been suspended due to landslide at 27th Mile and Sethe Khola.
Because of the restoration work at Rohini and Pankhabari, all transport services were diverted through the Mirik route. However, given the nature of rainfall over the last two days, there is apprehension of the Mirik route also being affected. "We are on a state of high alert. We are coordinating with officials of the other sub-divisions at an hourly basis," said a district administration official.

Goalkeeper Chetri has the knack to get his place
TNN, BHOPAL: Bharat Chetri is the comeback man of Indian hockey. The goalkeeper has acquired a knack of fighting his way back into the national team every time he is dropped.
The talented Chetri has a fascinating career graph. For someone who began his career in 2000 the rise was quick and once in the senior ranks, he has also realised how difficult it is to reach the top and stay there.
It has been a game of musical chairs for goalkeeper's position in the Indian team. But the Darjeeling boy has the intrinsic faith in his ability and the will to fight back when chips are down. Every national coach has picked and discarded him after a year or so. He was out of the team in 2004, 2007 and 2009, but never lost faith.
"Whenever I had been dropped, I assumed I needed to work on my game. It is good to have healthy competition for berths in the team. If I am not selected, it means I am not good enough and I am happy that the best player is representing the country," Chetri said.
"Every time I was rejected, I went back to train with renewed determination and waited for my opportunity. That way I have become mentally tougher."
For Chetri former India goalkeeper Ashish Ballal is the model.
"I have watched him in my younger days and I like his daredevil attitude. He was a tough goalkeeper and stood there without flinching."
Chetri's latest comeback was when he was recalled for the Commonwealth Games and he gave his most memorable performance against England in the semi-final.
It was a heart stopping moment in front of a packed Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium when Chetri stood like a rock in the penalty shootout. India recorded their best performance ever in the Games.
"It was the best moment of my career. We never made it to the final of the Commonwealth Games and performing in front of home crowd was heartening."
Now Chetri has his eye on the Olympic qualification in February and he feels that the Indian team stands a good chance.
The players have drawn a lot of flak after the Azlan Shah performance, but Chetri would not brood on it.
"We have had some bad moments and that pushed us down. Maybe, we lacked a bit in the physical conditioning because there was a three-month gap after the Asian Games," he said.
Chetri feels drafting too many new players at this point will not help the team much because they will take time to adjust.
He also praised coach Harendra Singh, who is under the scanner after the Azlan Shah debacle.
"We learnt a lot from Jose Brasa and Harendra is following the same line. Harendra is a good tactician and reader of the game."
Chetri feels they need to follow a similar style of play to develop hockey in the country.
"If you see Australia and other top teams, a youngster and a 30-year-old have similar style. In India you will find various styles being employed in different states or academies. And when the youngsters come into the national side the coach has to work on them to make them understand their roles."
A mischievous kid, Chetri took to hockey when his family sent him to Patna where a relative of theirs is a coach.
"He put me through systematic training and I put all my energies in the game. I was good in diving and that's how I took to goalkeeping," says the 29-year-old who then learnt the ropes at Danapur Army School and Sports Authority of India's Centre of Excellence, Bangalore.
After that it was a question of reaching the top and then the struggle to stay there.
Mamata for early tripartite meeting on Darjeeling
PTI, Kolkata, June 17: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said her government wanted the Centre to convene an early tripartite meeting on Darjeeling.
Winding up the debate on the Governor”s speech in the West Bengal Assembly, she said after an agreement with the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha was reached at official-level talks here on June 6, the state government had immediately conveyed it to the Centre with the request that it convene a tripartite meeting to work out the final agreement.
The Centre had yesterday sought a clarification from the state government on the matter and the reply had been given, she said.
According to Banerjee, her government was prepared to apprise the Opposition about the agreement with the GJM at the June 6 meeting.
Noting that a lot of development work like roads, bridges and industries needed to be taken up in the hills, she said she was waiting for the Centre to give a date for the tripartite meeting.
On her government”s development initiatives in ”junglemahal”, Banerjee said she would visit there soon with a development package.
She said while tribal families in junglemahal with an annual income of Rs 24,000 were earlier eligible to get rice at Rs two per kg, it would now cover those with an annual income of Rs 42,000. Non-tribal poor families with an annual income of Rs 36,000 would also be eligible to get the benefit.
Maintaining that a section of the poor people had been deprived of BPL cards because of political victimisation, Banerjee said that district magistrates had been given special powers to issue BPL cards to them.
